Speech Topics

Canadian politics and the changing media landscape

Traditional media outlets are losing advertising revenue at rapid rates to digital giants like Facebook and Google, and this trend has major implications for the quality and consumption of news media in Canada. The $600 million Liberal media bailout can do little to reverse the inevitable, and further erodes public trust in the media’s independence. What’s in store for the future of the Canadian news industry, and what are the implications for our democracy? Jasmine draws on her unique background in politics and experience running a social media agency to answer these questions, providing valuable insights for the audience.

The true burden of taxation in Canada

Taxation is now the single largest household expense for the average Canadian. We spend more on tax every year than we do on necessities like food or shelter, and we don’t start keeping any of the money we make until around mid-June (once we’ve finished giving the government its sizable share). While many Canadians don’t mind paying taxes toward health care or education, the reality is that much of the money the government takes from us is wasted and would be better off left in taxpayers’ pockets. Jasmine captivates the audience with shocking revelations about the true cost of taxation in Canada in this speech, and makes a compelling case for reform.

Canada’s debt problem

While most Canadians understand that debt has consequences, our politicians don’t seem to care. In an unprecedented and historic shift in fiscal policy, Prime Minister Trudeau brazenly announced he would abandon all efforts to return the budget to balance upon his re-election in 2019. His tenure will see over $100 billion added to an already heaping pile of federal debt, with no plan to measure whether these “investments” will pay off. Jasmine draws on her business background and experience with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation to analyze the risks of this approach and cautions her audience about what’s at stake.
